(G-S2008), Kettle Gourd, Woven leather rim. Size: 8 1/2″H x 8″W. Engraved around the gourd are images of cowboys, whooping and hollering at trail’s end, where a hot bath, clean clothes and a trip to the local saloon are awaiting their arrival. The bottom of the gourd sports an engraved steer head, signifying cattle as the mainstay of the cowboy’s way of life. Entwining the gourd, and providing additional accents, are hand engraved barbed wire strands. A simple story is told through the design of this work of art.

(G-W2008), Kettle Gourd, Palomino Horse Hair rim, 7 1/2″H x 8″ W. Braided palomino hair and the natural coloring of the gourd, make this piece an eye catcher. Yellow sinew is stitched into the gourd to hold the horsehair in place. The interior of the gourd is stained blood red, like the prairie sun depicted in the artwork. The horses are engraved deep into the gourd flesh so that they stand out, yet remain harmonious with the natural appearance of the gourd. War symbols, which were used by the Lakota indians, are engraved onto the horses. The simplicity of this stand alone design is pleasing to the eye and harmonious to the soul.

(G-S2008/01), Kettle Gourd, Leather rim, 8″H x 12″W. Cowboys have always had a close association with floral designs in their saddles, chaps, boots, belts and occasionally their shirts. To commemorate the cowboy’s love of floral arrangements, I created this gourd entitled “Cowboy Bouquet”. The top of the gourd has woven leather, in the pattern of riding reins; sewn in place with sinew. The body of the gourd reflects a floral design you might see in leather and is stained to reflect the color of leather used in the cowboy’s world.

G-W2008-01), Kettle Gourd,Bay Horse Hair rim, 8 1/2″H x 10 1/2″W.This gourd has braided bay horse hair surrounding its opening. Using the natural blemishes of the gourd, the engraved horses are seen running across a majestic landscape with the intention of returning to the village following their battle. The village is represented by the engraved teepee on the back of the gourd. The sides of the gourd have the war symbols of the “fire arrow” and the “hand print” of the warrior. The “fire arrow” would cause trouble for the enemy, which in turn would add strength to the warrior. The “handprint”, colored in red, shows that the warrior died with honor in battle. The story reflected on this gourd makes it one of my favorites.

(G-W1/2008), Canteen Gourd, Bay Horse Hair rim, 5 1/2″H x 7″W. The Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota Indians used the buffalo for food, clothing and shelter. Because the buffalo was so important, it held a special place in their religion. A holy man named Tatanka came to them as a buffalo in their time of need. Today, one Indian name for the buffalo is tatanka. “Tatanka Sun” reflects the legacy of buffalo running across the prairie. The braided horse hair rim is tied in place with black sinew. This pattern is very striking.
